1 year cries and hits in sleep

Since my daughter was about 3 months old she has never slept through the night. She has always had about 6 - 8 episodes of crying and fighting. Her pediatrician doesnt think anything of it, but I dont think she understands that its getting worst. Last night we had her in the bed with us and she started attacking me by hitting me in the face and screaming. If shes in her bed she will twist and turn her body screaming and crying. She doesnt nap unless I take a drive, but its hard for me now that the weather is so frigid. She goes to bed at 8 pm and wakes up at 12 am full of energy. She needs very little sleep. I dont know what to do. Does anyone know what these crying episodes might be? or what I should do?
