Frequent waking

My grandson is nearly 5 months old and is doing very well in all but one area. He puts himself to sleep independently in his crib at night around 8 p.m. and is given a dream feed around 10:30 p.m. After that, he consistently wakes up crying every hour from about 2 a.m. to 6 am. He often does not want to nurse at these times, so it's not hunger waking him and he must be helped back to sleep with a soother. Loosing the soother during sleep is not waking him, but something else definitely is. My daughter has just about given up hope of ever having a good day due to her own sleep deprivation. Any suggestions?
