Here is one way to see if it may be a sleep disorder is causing the crying.
Try watching him sleep, a video would be better.
While sleeping if he is making noise, moves around a lot, sweats, breaths with his mouth open, or is making extra effort to breath you should take him to a pediatric sleep specialist who is boarded in sleep medicine. Taking care of these problems early is very important.
Also if your child has a small recessed chin it is probably caused by the sleep apnea. The result will be a problem with the tongue not having enough room in the mouth during sleep and it will be sucked into the airway causing sleep apnea.
There are other sleep disorders that can cause the crying and should be checked for, however, difficulty breathing during sleep is the most common.
If your child is sleeping like a baby, no problems, then the problem may be behavioral. There are psychologist who are boarded in sleep that can help with this issue.
Hope this helps,
