8 month old sudden night waking

Hi all,
My 8 month old baby is a very good girl and has previously been sleeping through the night. She settles herself to sleep with all naps and eats well. She has started to wake at night maybe 10pm/11pm ish and is hysterical crying, I am not sure if she is still asleep but the only way to comfort her is if I pick her up for a few seconds and then put her down. sometimes this needs to be done a few times before she eventually goes to sleep.

I think maybe its a separation anxiety thing or maybe she is having these night terrors? I really dont know what to do. Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing and how did you over come it? I am desparate for a nights sleep. Please help, thanks!!
