Sounds like a sleep disorder may be happening.

Try watching him sleep, a video would be better.

During sleep if he is making noise, moving around a lot, sweats, breaths through his mouth, or makes extra effort to breath, you should take him to a pediatric sleep specialist who is boarded in sleep medicine. Taking care of these problems early in life is very important. He may be sleeping better in your arms because of the position he is in.

There are other sleep disorders that can cause disrupted sleep and should be checked for, however, difficulty breathing during sleep is the most common.

If your child is sleeping like a baby in bed, no problems, then the problem is behavioral. There are psychologist who are boarded in sleep that can help with this issue.
