I have had this problem for 15 years and no doctor has helped but i think i have learned some things over the years.
First I thought there were bugs in the mattress I was sleeping in - then i found it was all mattresses. This I read could be an allergy to mold spores. It got so bad that I was sleeping on newspaper on the floor, then even that was 'infested' with 'ghost bugs'.
I read that serotonin can amplify the incoming nerve signals of the skin. Anti Serotonin is supposed to moderate so it doesn't get out of control. Damage to the hypothalmus can interfere with the balance
I've noticed that eating meat after 3pm or any protein even chiken soup, makes my 'ghost bugs' much worse. try eating just cereal at night, also most antihistamines are also anti serotonins. I often take a 4 hour chlortrimeton and a shower to sleep. And my last resort, almost always effective, though not very comfortable: I turn the metal kitchen cabinet on it's side and put down some newspaper and put it in the center of the apartment, away from all other furniture and stuff, and sleep on that.
