Stage one sleep is sleep. The second, or REM stage, is the next progression of sleep. The most important aspect of the second stage of sleep is the rejuvenation of neurotransmitters. Without this rejuvenation, a person will not only feel like they have not achieved any sleep, but will become subject to many of the side-effects of insomnia (e.g., depression, irritability, etc.). This is serious condition, yet sometimes easier to rectify. There has been some documented success overcoming stage cross-over by using various seritonin levelers. Without promoting one over another, Remeron and Zoloft have proven effective with little or no side effects. It is very important that your Primary Care Physician agrees with this methodology and is well educated on appropriate dosing and withdraw techniques. If you are predisposed to depression, sudden withdraw from these meds can cause not only depression but a worsened case of stage two sleep acquisition.
