Posted by Roger on November 28, 1998 at 11:17:46:I'm wondering when or even if this vicious cycle of insomnia is going to end. When something gets to be a habit, like not sleeping, what can you do to break it?
I never used to think about not sleeping. Just go to bed and drift off. Now it's on my mind so much that when I go to bed I'm always concerned that it's going to be another sleepless night. And of course it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
So I lie awake, determined not to take a pill. Problem is, sometime usually around 2am or so, I finally give up and reach for something. I rationalize it by telling myself it's better to take a pill and sleep instead of being a total zombie the next day.
Does anyone know how long it takes to get the medication out of your system if you go cold turkey? In my case I've taken both ambien and ativan on alternate nights for the last 7 months, almost every night. Insomnia came out of the blue.
One of the few times I didn't take anything was the other night after coming home from a party. I had several glasses of wine, felt sleepy, fell into bed and slept the whole night. Felt fine the next day. I'm beginning to wonder what's worse, a couple glasses of wine or the ambien!
