What most of us would give to be able to pinpoint the cause of our insomnia. Your wife is one of the fortunate ones, in the respect that she knows what the triggers are. Certainly it's a hassle to be limited on what we eat, drink, or what activities we participate in, but knowing what these items are is half the battle.
If your wife is like the rest of us, she's probably a somewhat anxious person. We on this forum have attempted to determine which came first: anxiety or insomnia, but so far there is nothing definitive.
I admire you for speaking on your wife's behalf. Many of us lack a significant person to take the reigns and try to help. My advice is all things in moderation. If a substance or activity causes problems, it's best to cut back or stop completely. It may mean giving up a few of life's little pleasures, but it's worth it for a peaceful night's sleep.
