Sleep is divided into 2 sub-groups, Non-REM and REM. Non-REM is further subdivided into 4 subgroups, identified as Stages 1 through 4. Stage 1 is a transitional sleep stage, from wakefulness to prolonged sleep. Stage 2 is what you actually spend most of your time in. Stages 3 and 4 are deep sleep, also called delta sleep or slow wave sleep. Deep sleep is needed to feel physically refreshed. REM sleep, or Rapid Eye Movement sleep is when you do most of your dreaming. REM sleep is needed to feel psychologically refreshed in the morning. There are several sleep disorders that could be contributing to having very light or transitional sleep. These could include subtle sleep disordered breathing, which won't show up as apnea and requires specialized testing equipment for sleep testing. Also, periodic limb movements, Alpha intrusion (frequently seen in Fibromyalgia), hypervigilance syndrome, etc.
