An EEG will pick up an excessive amount of alpha; however, in order to pick up Alpha-Delta sleep the patient would have to achieve delta sleep. This is not very likely during a routine EEG. We know that people with Alpha-Delta sleep, and excessive alpha intrusion into all stages of sleep will report very poor unrefreshing sleep, even in the abscence of other sleep disorders. Some are now refering to this as a hypervigilance syndrome. There has not been much clinical success treating this with medication so far.
