I tend to agree with Chris. Although it is an interesting theory, I can not recall any cases where a specific trauma during sleep has caused long lasting insomnia. I interpret your theory using the following example. I once installed a ceiling fan incorrectly and it fell on me while I was sleeping. Scared the hell out of me. Now, whenever I try to sleep, all I can do is prepare to be traumatically awoken by something. I could see this causing some short term insomnia, but long term, your guess is as good as mine. However, keep this in mind; Trauma as the result of an event in which the participant felt helpless, such as childhood sexual abuse, almost always manifests itself in some form of a control disorder. Anorexia is the most common example, but control disorders can manifest themselves in many shapes...including Insomnia.
