I think you have a very valid point. If not a traumatic event during sleep, maybe something we associate with our bedtime rituals. I've felt for a long time that some traumatic event at or around bedtime could be the culprit. The cause of insomnia will vary from person to person. But for those of us who have had this condition since childhood, it makes sense. The mind has all sorts of protective shields in place to protect us from harm.
Here's another thought I've been having. Years ago when I went to a sleep clinic, the findings were non-existent. One thing the doctor said has been playing in my mind. He accused me of taking drugs that I didn't report, even though he did a blood screen and found no additional substances. Maybe there's a chemical in our bodies which mimics a drug, which prevents us from sleeping. Poppy seeds will give a false positive for marijuana, so why can't there be an unknown chemical in our bodies which gives a false reading for some other drug? I may be way off base, but it's an idea.
