Hi -- congratulations and best of luck on the rest of your pregnancy!

Active ingredient in Unisom is doxylamine succinate, which is an antihistamine like diphenhydramine (the more common ingredient in OTC sleep meds). Doxylamine succinate is available in Canada as part of a med combination to minimize morning sickness/nausea during pregnancy. it is considered by the Canadian authorities to be safe for this use but since this use was legalized there have been lots of anecdotal reports of teratogenesis (birth defects). However, none or very, very few of them appear to be due to the doxylamine.

There is a growing literature on the use of this drug during pregnancy and still no hard evidence that it is dangerous. Has your pregnancy been healthy? Do you have regular checkups and have you had ultrasounds? If everything appears to be normal and successful, then do just two things: 1. check again with your obstetrician (and get a second opinion) regarding the safety of Unisom, especially at the frequency with which you use it; 2. Don't worry too much. Otherwise you could go nuts imagining problems that aren't there. Enjoy your new baby.

A.N.
