Hi Kate

I’m 39, also live in Europe & I too have suffered from this horrible illness for 20 years. Unlike you, however, I did allow it to destroy my career. I congratulate you on carrying on working, (although I know a lot of people on this forum have no choice in the matter).

I had the same reaction to Remeron in that it made me sleep for about a week and then seemed to have the opposite effect and made me hyper at night! (as did the many other antidepressants I have tried over the past year in which my insomnia has been relentless).

I have now come to the conclusion that it might be best not to take anything (although I know medication is a lifer saver for some) and have had several desperate attempts to go it alone! Have now gone 18 nights (and counting!) without assistance (well, not strictly true – have had to resort to a glass of wine in the evenings). Whilst coming off everything has been like “taking an express train to hell”, as someone so aptly described it in a previous post in that I’ve hardly slept at all, I have had a few days where I haven’t felt quite as desperate.

With regards to hypnosis – I’m currently seeing a psychotherapist who also specialises in hypnotherapy. Whilst the latter does help me to relax, I don’t think it has actually helped me to sleep. I think the psychotherapy is more beneficial in that we are unearthing things which I can see may well have led me to become an insomniac.

I’m afraid I don’t know anything about the arctic root or Jamaican dogwood (would be interested to hear more). Tried Kava Kava which helped me to sleep but made me feel very strange the next day! Hope you find a solution for your insomnia.
