What I have found about Elavil is that at the very low doses at which it is taken (I now only take 10mg) it doesn't have any side effects. As an anti depressant it is prescribed at 75 to 150mg a day. The sleep is very refreshing, unlike a lot of the benzos which not only are addicting but give a more hangover(for want of a better word) type of feeling the next day. Also, Elavil has been around a long time(over 20 yrs. I believe) and some DR.'s feel more comfortable prescribing it as they've had more time to monitor any long term effects, unlike the newer so called "better" meds.Perhaps you could ask your Dr. if you can start at 10mg and work up only if you have to. I know that 50mg and under are the sedating perameters and since everyone is different, maybe 10 or 15 is enough for you...just a suggestion. Good Luck!!!
