As Beth mentioned, Elavil or anything else for that matter can be psychologically addicting...I know people who can't sleep if they don't follow their pre-sleep routines..i.e. brushing teeth, using a certain pillow, etc. These can all be said to be psychological addictions...albeit better than ingesting something. Elavil is not physically addictive like the benzos...that's its big advantage but taking any med, you have to determine if you are better off without...make that you and your Dr. but you have the ultimate responsibility. Perhaps you should try some relaxation tapes (there are many for sleep...check you local library if you don't want to invest in them right away) or the 2 books mentioned on this website. Only use meds as a last resort. I'm currently weaning off the Elavil(psychologically not physically) as my sleep is much improved. Good Luck!!!
