Posted by tina on November 07, 2001 at 05:56:58:I am in the middle of a bout with insomnia, and it seems to be different than I've had before. I agree with those who've said psychological insomnia is mostly due to anxiety--I fully believe that's what I am experiencing. Previously I have tried the typical benedryl, warm milk, warm bath, and more recently over this past year Ativan, which helps at 4mg and then as predicted decreases in effectiveness after a couple months. I decided to quit the meds and try anything and everything non-med to help with sleep. This was a month ago.
Since then I have had the same trouble falling asleep, and staying asleep throughout the night. In the past week I have tried to narrow down the symptoms: can't "get" to sleep, try to read until very drowsy but after turning the light off I end up lying there not able to go over the edge into sleepland. I toss and turn. I end up checking out the clock every 15 minutes it seems, all night long. I get increasingly warm in bed to the point where I sweat and have to remove the covers layer by layer. Then I get cold, and have to throw them back on. Then hot... The room is kept cool at night, so it's not the room that's too warm. I wear very little to bed.
A couple nights ago I had a ton of dreams, mostly very scary nightmares, but was waking up every half hour or so. I feel I really missed the "deep sleep" stage since I had so many dreams yet watched the clock through the night. Last night I had no dreams and watched the clock all night long. I get sleepy from reading then i can't fall asleep after that. Throughout the night I am pretty awake, my eyes just pop open as if it's morning. I try reading in the middle of the night, but it gets me sleepy again without the benefit of actually falling asleep.
I am wondering if it's a body temperature control problem, since I am always going from hot to cold through the night. Anxiety? I don't know of any acute situations in my life, just the usual thoughts racing around in the back of my mind.
I can't even sleep in the same bed with my husband because I am so sleep-deprived. He snores like mad and falls sleep in 2 minutes, adn those things will keep me awake just on their own! I seem to be having additional sleep problems...
Does anyone have any advice, etc.? I am at the point of calling my doc, but worry I won't be able to get an appt for days if not weeks...
Thanks in advance.
