Sorry to hear it's been so rough lately, Lynne. I think it is good to follow Jacob's advice and not reduce below 5.5 hours (even though I know you're not even getting that at the moment). I keep thinking eventually your body will crash and take the six hours.

Is your job very stressful? Do you think that is what started your chronic insomnia? Is there any way you could make some changes in that area?

As far as following good sleep hygiene and missing out on social occasions, what happens if you stay out later than 11 p.m.? I always thought it was most important to get up at the same time every day rather than sticking to a rigid bedtime as well. I don't have a real active social life, but we do stay up till midnight or 1 a.m. occassionally. I still get up at 6:30 the next morning so I am more tired, but I usually fall asleep that much easier the next night. (It wasn't always this way, but things improved.)

I hope things get better soon. Try not to look at past patterns of insomnia as predictors of what is going to happen this time. You said you've been following good sleep hygiene for years, but you are probably doing some other things differently now, such as not taking meds every night, so maybe things are changing very gradually for the better. Hope so.
