ambien dependence withdrawal?

i've been taking ambien every night for about 5 weeks now and everything i read about it says not to stop taking it abruptly if you've been on it more than a couple of weeks. i don't want my brain chemistry all messed up....should i taper off or just stop? i'm only using 5mg.
oh, and i've got these flashing lights in my peripheral vision very often that started pretty recently...related? should i be worried? if anyone's had a similar experience, i'd be curious to hear about it.
