I think when insomniacs realize that when you sleep you do not lose consciousness, it helps lessen the anxiety about sleep. When you respond to stimuli(as indeed you do during sleep..i.e. scratch your nose if it's itchy, etc. etc.) you are still conscious...a coma is a loss of consciousness. So therefore, if you view sleep as an altered or better yet, a relaxed state of consciousness, you will not be fearful about a loss of something(control, for some anxiety ridden people)!! Just a different perspective for those experiencing extreme anxiety about sleep!!!
