I believe that you have probably conditioned yourself to sleep via a conditioned reflex. Such conditioning would be involuntary, as it is normal response of the brain. i.e. certain stimulus evoke a physical response. e.g. darkness, bed and the sound of the fan may increase the release of neurotransmiters in the brain e.g. seritonin. Therapists specifically use these techniques to condition a response which is used to re-establish sleep paterns. As such a seemingly unobtrusive sound such as fans etc. if associated with the point of sleep could be used to condition a response which would help precipitate sleep. I would assume that someone who is regularly exposed to these or similar stimuli (outside of the sleep seting) would not recieve the same level of benifit as those who are not, unless the conditioned response is well established.
