i used to sleep with a clanky airconditioner at night and grew up in a noisy city. now i need a fan or a white noise machine to sleep well. when i'm out in the country i feel like there's this very high-pitched sound when i try to sleep. someone told me that that sound is ringing in the ears because of constant bombardment of the eardrums by noise the rest of the time, and that after a while you get used to it and there's real, true silence.
