Elavil withdrawal??

Posted by M on November 11, 2001 at 13:22:59:

Hi- I'm a 37 year old female and have had insomnia now for at least 12 years. Have tried everything including valerian, elavil, ambien, sonata, buspar, accupuncture, chinese herbs, hypnosis, sleep doc, psychologist, and recently Risperdal (drug for schizophrenia- whic I don't have- supposed to tone down an overactive messages from the brain). Anyway, now after feeling like a walking drugstore at times, I think I want to cleanse myself cold turkey but since trying to get off the Elavil, I have no deep sleep at al. I've gradually needed more and more to get that nice cozy sleepy middle-of-the-night feeling but that doesn't work. Down to 20mg now but I'm "aware" and dreaming most of the night and tired the next day. Misery. Has anyone tried to get off Elavil? Doc said it stays in your system about 5 days. What torture. Do you think insomnia can be chemical and not psychological?
