Good for you Lisdon. By ordering those two books you have just taken a very important step ahead. When they arrive, as Beth also recommends, do try to read them more than once. This is because the first time you tend to think: 'yeah, yeah, heard this all before - been there, done that...'. But then when you continue being an insomniac and you get really desperate you read them again and maybe you are finally persuaded to try out the programme seriously. It really should be done exactly as the books say (in my experience). If you miss out any steps, or if you don't practice the various exercises (relaxation, positive affirmations) every day, then it will probably not work for you. The key is to re-programme the brain to think more positively, which is what these books teach you to do if you follow their instructions carefully. However, do not obsess about it. Try to do the exercises with a calm heart and mind, without asking too much of yourself. It is basically a question also of cultivating love in your heart, to get rid of that anger, resentment and frustration which is probably there at the moment. This can only be done by positive thinking. It is a very similar kind of concept to Buddhist meditation, if you have ever dabbled in that. You should not try too hard, otherwise it doesn't work. You just have to try to 'be' rather than 'do'. To let go, and realise that things happen, that feelings come and go, and you just have to go with the flow, so to speak - let things happen, let feelings come and go - in a word, RELAX!
It might all sound a little odd to a novice, but once you get into it it's amazing how it all starts to make sense and seem so logical. The power of the mind really is underestimated in our anxious, stress-ridden societies. I think daily meditation or self-hypnosis should be made compulsory for all workers, as it's amazing how it calms your mind and helps you to think more positively.
Anyway, good luck, Lisdon - I'm sure you'll get better, just give it time, and try to fill your life with as many pleasurable things as possible.
