I have used Ambien off and on over the past year. I did not find it to be physically addictive, but you can develop a psychological dependence, in the sense that you think you need a pill to be able to sleep. If you use it regularly, you will also develop a tolerance, so that you need more of it to get the same effect. I would just caution you that Ambien is NOT a cure for insomnia. If you've had a problem for 10 years, Ambien isn't going to solve it. If you haven't already done so, try to find a doctor who specializes in sleep disorders. They are sometimes hard to find, but worth it if you can find a good one. Seeing a therapist regularly can also be helpful. Also, check out the "two books" everyone recommends on this site - Say Goodnight to Insomnia by Gregg Jacobs and Desperately Seeking Snoozin' by John Wiedman. They contain a lot of valuable information about the causes of insomnia and behavioral changes which can help break the cycle. Good luck!
