My experience is much like Karen's and the others who responded above. I QUICKLY developed a tolerance for Ambien and therefore try to use it as infrequently as possible. As it is, I have to take 2 10mg Ambien pills to get one night of sleep. And if I'm very anxious, that doesn't even do it. I agree that it can be psychologically addicting in that you start to believe that you need to take it to sleep. Also, especially when I first began taking it, the feeling of sleepiness overtaking me was so wonderful, I was definitely pulled to repeat it. That feeling has become less dramatic over time. I never allow myself to take Ambien more than 2 nights in a row and no more than twice a week. And I usually don't take it even that often. I agree with the others that it is not a solution to insomnia. It has seemed to help me try other solutions (sleep restriction and sleep hygiene) by being something I can fall back on. I tell myself that if I have a few really bad nights, I will take Ambien one night and get good sleep. That has seemed to ease my anxiety enough to do the approaches suggested in the books recommended by one of the others who responded to you. I hope to be able to stop taking it eventually. Good luck to you. I also recommend the books by Wiedman and Jacobs. Their approach has me sleeping better a lot of the time, although not all the time.
