Sandman, in the best of all worlds we should consult the physician. Unfortunately, many of them are ill-informed, even those who are well-thought of by their colleagues. I am saving for posterity a prescription that I was given for ambien by a psychiatrist. It prescribes 10 mg ambien (so far alright) with one repeat after four hours (that makes 20 mg per night. The prescription is for 30 tablets, with 5 refills allowed (wish I knew how to type in bold letters). That's 180 10 mg. ambien pills.
The other MD, the one I use now, said that ambien is non-addictive and that one needn't taper. Worst case a couple of nights of rebound insomnia.
