To Steve,
It sounds like your building up a tolerance extremely quick to Trazodone. I've been taking Trazodone for 5 and a half years and 50mg of trazodone worked like a charm for me during my first year of insomnia. I slept between 8-9 hours per night with no awakenings. However, during my second year with trazodone, it slowly stopped working at 50mg and i ended up doubling it to 100 mg and that worked for about 6 months, and that's when my nightmare with medications took off. I became a walking pharmacy. I have managed to taper myself off of ambien, elavil, and sonata. I'm currently taking Trazadone at the 150mg dose level and it's barely working. I'm sleeping between 2-3 hours per night and it's very light sleep at that. I'm having no luck with tapering off it and i'm ready to quit using it cold turkey . Based on my experience with insomnia and sleeping medications, i would strongly advise you not to go down that slippery slope. I can't tell you how many times during the last year, that i have said to myself "if only i knew back then (when my insomnia started,) what i know now. I would find a good cognitive-behavioral therapist and read the 2 books that are always mentioned on
this forum and be patient with yourself and your recovery from insomnia. If i can prevent one person from experiencing the hell that i'm going through right now(and it's going to get much hotter when i quit the trazodone cold turkey, talk about rebound insomnia and not sleeping a wink for 3-4 weeks) i will feel good. God Bless.
