Please don't be discouraged by Sleepy Aussie's story. Hers is just one story and there are many others out there. In my view, if you have been addicted to medicines (and I think you must be by now) and if your insomnia is really bad, then sleep restriction (or bed restriction, as I prefer to call it) can help you (BUT, it is only part of the whole programme). I don't want to repeat myself too much, but I consider myself to be a success story, and my insomnia was extremely bad. I was also addicted to medicines for many years. Please consult my previous messages on this and previous forums, because I have explained everything there.

It is not an easy road, but the rewards are there at the end of it, so do try to persevere and not be persuaded back onto medicines. Read the books 'Desperately Seekin' Snoozin' by John Wiedemann and 'Say Goodnight to Insomnia' by Gregg Jacobs. They are very useful books which can help you to overcome your problem. But you must try to follow 'the rules' carefully, or it won't work (i.e. no cheating on going-to-bed or getting up times, however awful you feel, religiously writing down positive thoughts every day, etc. etc.). Remember, it is not easy, but it is worth it in the end. You need to have faith in yourself and confidence that you can and will be able to do it. Don't let yourself be upset when you have setbacks - say to yourself it doesn't matter. Get plenty of exercise and be as positive as you possibly can. Tire yourself out physically during the day and in the evening try not to think about sleep at all - distract yourself with some pleasant activity. Over time, you can do it, but you must be prepared to go without sleep for a while before it starts to get better - it may get worse before it gets better, but a lot of things are like that in life.
