How I cured my insomnia

Posted by tb on March 23, 2002 at 02:46:42:

I was having insomnia for 6 months. My average sleep was about 5.5 hours per night. I had nights with no sleep and on my best nights I had 6.5 hours. The whole situation felt like hell and I thought about suicide.
After trying a lot of different things I came up with the following idea: I tried to get ride of all things that kept me from sleeping.
I made a complete break in environment and routine. I moved to a cabin in the mountains
for 4 weeks all alone. There was nobody there, so it didn’t matter how I looked. I had off from work so it so it didn’t matter if I felt tired the next day. For the first time I had no watch so I didn’t know how much I slept. Therefore I would worry less about how long I was sleeping. I went out in nature and tried to find my balance again.

-Medication: I used some long-acting Sleeping pills (like dalmane) to support myself.
For example I took one to stop the current circle of insomnia. That gave me like a new starting point at the beginning of the 4 weeks. Since they fade out slowly they also helped me find a little confidence in my own sleep again.( I used no more then10 dalmane (30 mg) during 6 months.)

-I forced myself not to think about sleep. As soon as these thoughts crossed my mind, I tried to think about something else. I tried to convince myself, that every thought about sleep was a step back.

-When I was in bed I tried to meditate to stay calm.

During these 4 weeks my sleep really improved. After I went home again my insomnia was in an on/off mode. One night good, the next bad the next good again.

I was in the luck position of being a student this allowed myself to take a lot of time off.
I made a long holiday trip with my girlfriend. Camping and travelling for 12 weeks. During that time my insomnia almost completely disappeared! I didn’t need any medication!
Right now my sleep is pretty good. I get anxious from time to time when I have something important happening the next day. Sometimes I take a sleeping pill then (dalmane 15 mg). But I know that my sleep while return if I stay calm and it always does.
I’m very thankful for that.
I think our bodys aren’t sick. It’s our mind that we have to heal.
I know that most of you can’t take that much time off. But I hope that my story can help you somehow. INSOMNIA IS CURABLE! Don’t give up!
