Tim,

How long has this been happening? Did your friend start on any medication that might be interfering with sleep? If she is on meds, she might consult with her doctor to see if the meds might be interfering with sleep- one approach might be to transition over to another, similar med to see if that might not cause an insomnia side-effect. People who get insomnia on one drug might not get insomnia on another.

Does she take any drinks with caffeine? If so, one thing to try would be to not drink anything that could contain caffeine for at least 3-4 days (a long-time caffeine user might take two weeks to fully withdraw)...no tea, no cola or diet cola, no coffee (or even decaf coffee at first).

If she is not on any meds, and has gotten off caffeine, she probably should go to see a either a psychiatrist or a neurologist who has training and experience in dealing with sleep problems.

Do ask her to be active in trying to solve it- long-term sleep deprivation can greatly affect the quality of one's work or school-work, so it is important to try to resolve the issue.

I had insomnia for 15 weeks, and it was resolved two weeks ago when my doctor lowered the dose on one med and increased the dose on another, so I know how hard it is to go for a long time wondering if you'll ever sleep normally again, but have her not give up hope, as sometimes, the problem can be solved!
