Your story is just like mine! Ive been taking ambien everyday for 3 years (except when i run out) and finally now i am starting to taper down. At first i started off on 10 mg then went to 15 then 20mg, and cut back down to 10mg and 7.5mg of remeron. in addition to that i am now taking it every other day. but its really hard, bc on the days i dont take it i pretty much dont sleep, or if i do i knock out at 9am, my sleep doc told me i would sleep fine if i was in japan or something when 9am would be night. I didnt take my sleep med last night, i didnt even sleep but the weird thing is i had dreams though, but im so sure i didnt sleep. tonight im going to forgo the meds too, its weird im scared to take my meds today, usually i would be so relieved to take it, but i guess im just scared that when i take it, it wont work anymore. Gosh i thought i was the only one who took ambien for a long time everyday, but i figure the best way to sleep the way we once did is to step up to the plate and bear with it. it seems ur going through a rebound period, i bet my sleep schedule would be the same if i took 2.5-5mg to ambien too. i dont think ambien causes brain damage, but i feel it does cause me to lose my memory somewhat, ive been more forgetful lately. if ur doc doesnt care about ur meds, i think u should start fishing around for another one, bc then ur going to be on this med forever. my doc is the same as urs but whenever i ask for a refill he gives me a hard time. good luck with your sleep.
