Hypnic Jerks - Big warning

Posted by CB on June 26, 2002 at 15:51:00:

Hi Iwas recently given sertraline(Zoloft) by my Dr as a med to combat an anxiety rush I was having just before I went into sleep mode. Disaster as I now have serious side effects after taking the meds for one wk, I now developed hypnic jerks, or myoclonic jerks just before going to sleep which totally prevent me from sleeping. The Dr then gave me Trazadone 50mg to help me sleep although I continued to take the Zoloft. This worked a treat until I developed serious muscle twitching predominately on the backs of my legs. I have been taken off the meds but the side effects remain. I am now totally at my wits end.I have been to see a consultant psychiatrist who has assured me that the side effects will go away eventually. This shas been at least three months after coming off the zoloft and the side effects are still there, not as severe as when I was on the meds but enough to totally freak me at sleep onset. Is there anybody out there who suffers from hypnic jerks and knows of any "save" or alternative treatment as I dont want to go down the road of taking chemicals as I believe the only known treatment is the use of Clonazipan(Klonipan)I dont know if that is the correct spelling Ive heard the usual horror stories and I dont want to go there. Any advise would be helpful.
