Your insomnia and anxiety is exactly what I have been through a few times in the past 8 years! I have a few nights that I can't sleep and the panic and anxiety takes over. After a few weeks of this, the "chemical imbalance" takes over. My doctor prescribes ativan also. Be careful with these pills because they have a terrible rebound effect which ironically is a worst bout of insomnia than the original insomnia that started this vicious cycle.
The only thing that has really helped me is Paxil, an antidepressant. I'll warn you it makes you feel terrible the first two weeks, but after that your anxiety goes away and your insomnia. For me it made it easier to get off of the Ativan - which is highly additive.
Good luck. This has really help me.
