More musings on life without sleep

Posted by Neil on August 11, 2002 at 18:39:02:

Yes, insomnia is truly unique. Every other condition you can 'get a good night's sleep and things will look better in the morning'. But with insomnia every problem is magnified and instead of bed becoming the sanctuary, it becomes the enemy. God designed human life so that for 8 hours a day we could leave this planet and all of its cares- it's called sleep and it's a precious gift. Most of us only realize what a great gift it is when it's gone. I'm not exagerating when I say that there were days in the past year when I would have given everything I own, just to sleep normally. It sure puts things in focus, O the vanity, as Hope said of striving for material goods, when things like peace of mind are so invaluable. Heidi my heart goes out to you. I used to be a teacher before I joined the gov't and to even contemplate teaching after a sleepless night is unthinkable. I condsider myself to be a strong person and have overcome many challenges in life but my limit is 2 sleepless nights. After that I come unglued - I crave sleep like a drowning man craves air. Happily pills still work for me but they are like borrowing from the bank and usually there is a payback. Anyway, you're on my prayer list, Heidi. Still, I wouldn't change much of what happened in the past year, because of what it's done in my heart. It's changed the way I look at life and the way I look at people. Even though I condsidered myself to be a caring person I now realize how insulated I was from people and their suffering. Not any more. I keep telling God that's enough change, thank you very much, but in His wisdom He knows the time of my release as He does yours. And yes , my friends, as great as they have been, keep wondering when I'm going back to work. They just don't get it.I have a friend who had a nervous breakdown 2 years ago and hasn't worked since . He gets it. He used to despise weakness. Now he has a whole new attitude. It's funny how that works.
Well that's enough rambling, bye for now.

God bless
