Niki, you may wish to switch to a longer acting benzo such as clonazepam (smallest dose is .25 mg). This may help you sleep a little longer and not feel jittery/depressed every morning. Then, if you want to discontinue, cut the pill in half and wean off that. If you've been on Xanax for only 2 weeks, you should not have much physical withdrawal, but you will still have rebound insomnia. Also, if you are getting 4 hours without a sleep aid, then you are in a good position to stop right now...but only you and your doctor will know if you can tolerate the insomnia, stress and migraines. It's very hard, and it takes time for your brain to regain its equilibrium. Relaxation is the key to recovery. Keep in mind that insomnia will not kill you...many people go for days without any sleep at all. I've gone without for up to 10 days. Having said all this, it is most serious when people start talking about suicide. You may need to be on meds for a while and then try to wean off later when you are feeling more stable. I think it is important to communicate your feelings to your doctor a.s.a.p. and then to discuss meds together if that is the route you want to go. Best wishes and remember your sons need you...please get some help now! (P.S. Keep in mind that you may be having hormonal changes due to childbirth and that this can cause all kinds of emotional problems.)
