Like yourself, I could fall asleep standing until it gets close to my bedtime (10:30ish). I tend not to worry about things (after all, worry and guilt never achieved anything and are such a waste of energy), but I have a rather creative mind which tends to reach it's creative peak in the later hours - always has.
As yet I've not tried sleep restriction in so far as getting up and doing something else until I'm dozy again. Usually I am so exhausted that I probably wouldn't have the energy anyway, even though I'm not "sleepy". So when I find that I am laying in bed, unable to sleep as my mind ponders the great mysteries of the universe, I like to just lay there with my eyes closed and try to relax. At least this way I am not fretting over not getting to sleep like I used to, and even if it does take me anywhere from 20min to 2hrs to fall back asleep, I no longer feel so bad about it. I might only average 4 or 5hrs a night (which is pretty good for me), but I don't feel as emotionally strung out about it as I used to (..the physical side, alas, is a whole different story!!..).
At the end of the day, I think it comes down to doing what feels most comfortable for you. Although we all suffer the same affliction, the causes behind our insomnia are as individual as we are, and I imagine so are the "remedies".
I hope you find something that helps soon.
