Incompatible sleeping with TV

Posted by sarah on August 13, 2002 at 13:33:56:

My fiancee and I have a wonderful relationship. We get along great and love spending time with each other. There is one little problem though that seems to be affecting our relationship.

We recently moved in together so it has been becoming more and more of an issue. He claims that he can only get a good nights sleep with the TV on. I can NOT sleep when the TV is on! Usually I will wait a reasonable amount of time (an hour or so) and then if he is still watching I ask him to turn the tv off. I have offered to sleep in the guest bedroom but he finds that offensive since we are both cuddlers.

He thinks that I should deal with the tv on at least one night a week- so that he can get a refreshing nights sleep. He says that the noise from the tv mutes out other night noises. Am I being selfish to request the tv off when I'm trying to sleep? I can sleep with non-vocal music on but when I hear voices I concentrate on them and can't fall asleep or if I am sleeping I wake up. I need a relaxing setting to sleep- I've had bouts of insomnia since I was a child. I also wake up at least twice nightly (if the tv is on- more frequently). I realize that my fiancee has trouble sleeping also but he typically falls asleep quickly when the tv is off (although the next day he claims that he didn't sleep well).

What should I do? I've suggested playing music- he opposes that idea, I've suggested sleeping in seperate rooms- that upset him and frankly I love cuddling while sleeping. I've tryed earphones but the flickering light also distracts me.

Any suggestions?
