It is sometimes strange, but many insomniacs sleep better in the sleep lab than they do at home.
There was a rich oil man in Texas with severe insomnia who slept so well in the sleep lab he wanted to rent a room in the lab when ever he wanted to get a good nights sleep and was willing to pay big bucks for it.
Sometimes people feel safer in the sleep lab than they do at home. Especially if you live in a neighborhood where there is a fair amount of crime, dogs barking, bad bed, or some other conditional situation which makes it more difficult for you to fall asleep.
In the lab, you are expected not to sleep so the pressure to get sleep is eased and you typically find it easier to fall asleep.
There are normal sleepers who sleep even better when they are away from home in hotels or visiting family. Why? can't say but it probably has something to do with the home environment or something they are not doing before bed that they normally do at home.
