Posted by Neil on August 14, 2002 at 12:07:53:Hi Andrea, thanks for the input. Just responding to a few questions you raised. As to my home, I live in British Columbia about a day's drive from Vancouver. Regarding the daily dosage of Vitamin C . Several things. First there is a difference between a maintenance dosage and a therapeutic dosage. In the U.S. they have what are called the RDAs( the recommended daily allowance) for all nutrients. These are set by the gov't and is the minimum amount to prevent deficiency. You could call this a maintenance dosage and even at that no nutritionist I follow believes these levels are adequate to prevent sub-clinical malnutrition. This is probably what Weil was thinking of. A therapeutic dosage is the amount required to alleviate a medical condition or make positive change in the body. For instance Vitamin C at high and consistant dosages detoxifies the body because it colates heavy metals and holds them in suspension till they are eliminated by the kidneys. As well 500mg may be adequate for a retiree who gardens all day long but not for the working stiffs I know.If you take 500mg at 8:00 am and drink coffee, use birth control pills and are under stress I guarantee by noon your body will have low Vitamin C levels. The greatest evidence is Linus Pauling. He died a couple of years ago at 97 . He took 10 grams of Vitamin C daily and in times of sickness would take as much as 100 grams. Vitamin C has no toxicity , the only recommendation is to take buffered Vitamin C after 3000mg and when and if you get diarreah you know you've reached your limit. It's good to note that Pauling did all his reasearch using cheap drugstore tablets. That's what I use not the ones with flavenoids etc.
Anyway that's my 2 cents. Yes, it is appalling that most of the major medical schools in North America don't even have a single course in nutrition. In a presentation , I once did a comparison of medical schools and vetinary schools. Most medical schools had no course on nutrition and those that did had one course in a 4 year program - about 25 hours. On the other hand every vetinary program was dominated by nutritional courses, and this was considered to be the primary issue in creating and maintaining animal health.
Duh! It leaves one speechless, doesn't it?
