I certainly believe that eating right is the key to good general health and have found all the information in this particular thread very interesting.
I'm terrible when it comes to taking vitamins (..I'm great for about the first 4 days and then I keep forgetting...hmmmmm...wonder if that's anything to do with sleep deprivation (heh heh)..), but I do seem to have more energy when I do. In general I try to eat a fairly healthy diet, but I must agree with Neil about the quality of nutrients in our food (..or lack thereof..) considering the depletion of nutrients in our soil. There is also the storage component of food to be considered. The nutritional value starts decreasing immediately after food is harvested and most (if not all) nutritional value is lost by the time it reaches the consumer in the stores.
I have also heard about the benefits of calorie reduction, as scientists have found that remote communities who exist on very basic diets tend to have much longer life spans than those of us consuming "western" diets. However, who wants to eat the diet of a Tibetan goat herder!? Considering I don't smoke, gamble, eat meat, drink caffine, softdrinks, or much alcohol, and I certainly don't sleep (..much!..), I'm prepared to risk the occasional slice of cheese-cake or pizza!!
Again, I think a lot of this comes down to the individual. I know there are certain foods that cause certain reactions with me, but this may not be true for someone else. I just follow the "everything in moderation" rule and hope for the best!
