Posted by heidi2 on September 14, 2002 at 08:38:05:Hello, dear friends: I just made it through the fourth night with sleep restriction, trying to stick to the book! I think I may have gotten 4-41/2 hrs. I went to bed at 1:10 a.m.---couldn't go to sleep because there was a kid on roller skates, yes, on roller skates, at 1:10 a.m. I put on my rope and went out to talk to him. He stopped.
So then I was a little worked up/anxious, but it seems I went to sleep about 20-30 mins. later. I woke up at around 4:00 a.m. Couldn't go back to sleep. Finally, decided to go to my second bed in another room and there, after a while, was able to go back to sleep for maybe 1-1/2 hrs.
It does feel good not to take any medications. During the day, despite feeling fatigued, I feel more like the real me. The interesting thing is that as the day progresses, I feel less exhausted.
The hardest thing is getting up at 7:00 when you don't have to be anywhere and you are tired, wanting to stay in bed.
It is really hard to stay relaxed when you wake up after only a couple of hours and there isn't much time left of the night. After four nights of this, I feel pretty exhausted.
When I get angry, discouraged, feel sorry for myself, get scared, etc., I try to think of it this way: Do I want to get a good night's sleep tonight with medication (to temporarily end my suffering) and then find myself back in marginal or no sleep, or do I want to hang on and possibly, very possibly, get more quality sleep without medication for the rest of my life.
I wish I could be more cheerful. Any words of encouragement are most welcome. Thanks heidi2
