There are others here who are more knowledgeable than I am regarding some of your questions and who will be along soon, I'm sure. However, as a person who lived with a lot of anxiety and very little sleep for many years I can speak to a couple of your points.

First of all, regarding relaxation tapes, meditation, etc.: don't give up. It's a technique that needs to be learned and maybe best in a class or by a very good teacher. When your fears, thoughts, etc., keep going through your head, try to accept them as if they were being spoken by someone else while you tend to your relaxation. They will scream for attention and you can just refuse to interact with them, or you can tell that part of yourself that you are going to be busy for awhile but will be back. Might sound strange, but it can work. It did for me. Then focus on your breath and keep focused there for at least 20 minutes or count your breaths for 120 to 200 full breaths. Breathe evenly and slowly and evcentually you will relax. You might not go to sleep, but you will relax.

Regarding medications: the medication has to be right for you. There are medications which are not addictive but they might not work for you. We are all different and medications work on different parts of your brain. A sleep doctor can probably best help with finding what is best for you in that regard. On the other hand, if your stressful situation is temporary, your family doctor might be able to help you by prescribing something to relax you for a short time.
