You are not alone!

I was just going to post a question about whether any women experience extreme insomnia before their period. I've had a week averaging 4 hours of sleep a night, got my period two days ago and slept 7 hours straight last night, and I *think* I actually fell back to sleep at 6 and slept until 7. I feel like a different person today.

Like you, I do everything when the insomnia hits, and try not to be anxious because I know it's not the end of the world (even though it sometimes feels like it). But it's like a brick wall. I'm on Remeron, take Ambien, and a little Serzone, so I initially fall asleep fine, but can't sleep more than a few hours in the week or so before my period.

It's been like that since I had a child 8 months ago (see the posting about post-partum insomnia).

After my son was born I had very bad insomnia, culminating in nights where I'd only sleep 2 hours (and a few no-sleepers). At week 6 postpartum, I started bleeding vaginally. I thought "oh my god, I'm so exhausted I've got uterine bleeding!" It lasted about a week. My sleep wasn't great in between, but I don't think it was horrible. Then the same thing (really bad sleep for the week before my period), and more bleeding at 10 weeks. Then again at 14 weeks. At that point I realized the bleeding was my period, and had been all along, even though I was nursing exclusively.

My psychiatrist today suggested I see an endocrinologist, who would probably put me on the pill. I've got slight hypertension, so it makes me a little nervous. But, if it would keep my sleep more stable, I'd be up for it.

Has anyone else had experience going on the pill, or insomnia that tracks with your menstrual cycle?

I should probably make a new thread for discussion about this, huh? But, I wanted you to know that you're *not* alone in this pattern.

Jenny
