ajm, please don't give up hope. you are very young, and it sounds like you've only had insomnia less than a year. as you say, there could quite possibly be something physical messing up your sleep, but the mind and body are so intricately intertwined it is very hard for anyone, even expert physicians, to untangle the causes of a problem like yours.

the one thing that is constant in life is that everything changes. so the suffering you are going through now will not last forever. it is not irreversible. it is so hard to stay positive when you are sleep deprived, but working on the way you react to the insomnia may help alleviate your pain, even if it is partly phsyical.

it is true that sleep restriction doesn't help everyone, but sticking to regular bedtimes and wake ups is beneficial for everyone. that means your sleep will be restricted on those nights you couldn't fall asleep but you get up at the same time in the morning anyway. it took me about 4 months of doing this before my sleep became less erratic. and none of the meds i took ever worked consistently either.

hormones are tricky things, and definitely affect my sleep every month. since you can't afford to be running to a bunch of doctors, try to read as much as you can. books were what saved me. and don't give up trying--something, or perhaps many things, are eventually going to help you get better.
