Hi AJM - I'm another one for whom sleep restriction has never had an effect. I would usually never spend more than 7hrs in bed and my sleep time would hardly ever be more than 5hrs. Even when I was a child and was being sent to bed at 7:30pm, I would lie awake until at least midnight, then be up for school by 7am (..and my weekends would be much the same - apart from having to go to school, that is (tee hee)..).

Even now, I am not working and have the luxury of staying in bed all day long (..should I so desire..), my sleep has dropped back from the wonderful 7/8hrs I was initially enjoying, to my standard 5 - which I get by on OK, but even though I can function, I am still spending my days feeling tired and exhausted. It doesn't seem to matter how exhausted I am, I just can't seem to drift over the edge into slumber land (..the last few nights it has been taking me a good 3hrs to even START to feel like I might be ready to drift off..).

The idea of getting up after 20min until I feel tired again doesn't work for me either - I would NEVER get any sleep if I did that. I'm already so tired that even rolling over in bed is a major effort, but GETTING TO SLEEP is still my major hurdle.

On the bright side, once I actually DO manage to fall asleep, I am now enjoying very few wake-ups, so that is a BIG PLUS. I also don't seem to be spending so much of the night trapped in the world of being half-awake/half-asleep anymore, so at least my 5hrs seem to be more restful, for which I am ever so grateful.

I have just learnt to accept I will probably always have this problem (..although you can be sure I will at least try anything that offers a remedy..). Now I just "go with the flow". I no longer let it stress me and when it has been affected my work performance, I've just taken a day off to crash - which really helps me to get through the worst times.

Medications have never done jack, but I seem to have quite a high tolerance to most drugs. I remember going in for minor surgery when I was about 5yrs old; I was given my dose of anesthetic, when they came back to wheel me in for surgery I was still awake, so they gave me a second dose, and I STILL woke up halfway through the op - so sleeping meds? BAH!!

Not that any of this will help you, but just know that you are not alone and what works for one person mightn't necessarily work for another. The best you can do is be as healthy as you can and roll with the punches when they come.
