Advice on Desyrel (trazodone)

Hi former/current Desyrel users. I have had serious problems with insomnia and mitigated the nightmare with Remeron. My brother is suffering the same problem and his is worse because he's becoming very violent due to lack of sleep. He finally saw a doc. this past week, who prescribed Ambien. It worked great one night and zero the next. I'm trying to convince him to try a better drug therapy (he NEEDS sleep!), but I'm afraid he'll gain too much on Remeron. So I'd like to know about Desyrel. How long did the side effects last? Did it work? Did you gain weight with it?
