Beth, I agree with much of what you said. I, personally, think that most people's insomnia is conditioned rather than resulting from physical causes. I am certainly no expert, so I am sure there are exceptions to this. I had severe insomnia for a few months. I had many nights of zero sleep, and even went three nights in a row with zero sleep. I never did try sleep restriction, although I did make sure that I went to bed and got up at roughly the same time each day. My success initially came from medications. I took Ambien for a while, and then Remeron for about a month. I was able to wean off the Remeron over a period of a few days. As I learned that I could sleep with just a 1/4 a tablet, I had the confidence to give it up all together. I could sleep pretty well most nights because just knowing I had the medication in the house, gave me comfort. I knew I could resort to it if I needed it. I sleep okay most nights now for the last year and a half, but I do sometimes have trouble going back to sleep if I am awakened during the night. Sometimes I manage to get back to sleep on my own and other times I end up taking an Ambien. Just thought I'd tell you my experiences.
