Beth,
I know what SR is but what is stimulus control?
Is that when you stop doing overstimulating stuff near bedtime?
I agree with alot of what you said. I have had a bad bout of onset insomnia for 4 months(many nights with 0 sleep)which I believe started due to depression over marital problems and lack of a job. The use of Ativan and Elavil helped initially but the insomnia continued due to anxiety and conditioning.
The good news is, I have slept good for 3 nights in a row with no meds and feel much more hopeful. Just knowing that I can fall asleep without meds is a relief for me. I slept good for 1 week in August without meds and then had a setback so I pray that this good fortune continues.
Going to bed when sleepy(1am), not looking at my alarm clock(used to do this every hour), and having a positive outlook has made all the difference. I find that I feel much better the next day if I don't obsess about it during the night even if I get little sleep. I finally had the energy to drive the car to another town and do some early xmas shopping. Yeah!
In the past the Ativan or Elavil helped me for 2 reasons. If I get 0 sleep for one night(usually due to being too sensitive, angry, emotional,
overstimulated, overtired, overthinking things, or
its the week before my period), sometimes the insomnia continues, and it perpetuates so I stop this by taking a med for one night which puts me back on track. Also just knowing I have it on hand to stop the insomnia from continuing helps with the anxiety. I don't like to take drugs because of the side effects and the psychological dependency but they are acceptable for occasional use or for the short term to stop the suffering, break the insomnia-anxiety cycle and build confidence.
